Types of Shrimp

Shrimp are crustaceans that have long bodies and swim as their primary mode of locomotion. The most common species are of the order Caridea and the suborder Dendrobranchiata, but other crustaceans can also be referred to as shrimp. Here are some examples. To find out more, you can read about the different types of shrimp.

Whiteleg shrimp

The whiteleg shrimp, also known as the Pacific white shrimp or king prawn, is a species of prawn that lives in the eastern Pacific Ocean. It is often caught and farmed for its edible meat. In addition to being a popular food, it is also used for medicinal purposes.

The Whiteleg shrimp is an economically important species of shrimp. It is commonly sold in supermarkets around the world. Because of its high value, it is also farmed commercially in several countries. Its farming system is divided into 4 basic categories. The first category represents the low stocking density method, which involves harvesting shrimp using bag nets.

Mantis shrimp

Mantis shrimp are carnivorous marine crustaceans that are found in the ocean. They belong to the order Stomatopoda and the class Malacostraca. They grow to a maximum length of about 38 cm. These creatures are common in many marine environments. The size of mantis shrimps is typically around 10 cm, but they can grow to be up to 38 cm long.

Mantis shrimp have two kinds of eyes. The first type is called a spearer. It has sharp teeth that impale its prey. It feeds on both soft-bodied and hard-bodied animals. It also has good binocular vision and has the ability to see colour.

Opossum shrimp

Opossum shrimp are tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that live in fresh and brackish water. They are known to be extremely sensitive to their environment, and they are often used as environmental monitors. Researchers use the shrimp’s physical responses to pollution to identify deteriorating water quality. During the day, these shrimp move toward areas with more sunlight, and at night, they retreat to lower depths. In addition, the shrimp may form clusters while swimming.

Opossum shrimp have eight limbs, with tails that branch off into two parts. They also have one pair of stalked eyes and two pairs of antennae. Their tails, called maxillipeds, are used to filter plankton, while the opossum shrimp’s eight legs, or pereopods, are used for swimming.

Skeleton shrimp

The skeleton shrimp is a member of the Caprellidae family of amphipods. Its slender, thread-like body allows it to almost disappear amongst seaweed filaments, bryozoans, and hydroids. This slender appearance also makes it popularly known as the “ghost shrimp”.

Skeleton shrimp grow to be 0.5 to 2 inches long, with males larger than females. They can be green, pink, or pale brown, depending on the habitat they live in. These shrimp can change their color to blend in with their surroundings. They are cylindrical in shape and have two pairs of antennae on their head. The first pair of antennae are much longer than the second pair.
