Types of Seafood and Their Uses

Common types of seafood and their uses

Seafood can add variety and flavor to any diet while providing essential nutrients, like omega-3s and iodine. There are various varieties of seafood with distinct tastes and textures, most commonly fish, shellfish and crustaceans. Fish species that fall under this category include tuna, salmon and cod; mackerel swordfish as well as sharks skates rays and sturgeons in Xiphiidae (scombridae); while for crustaceans its most prevalent members include crab, shellfish Xiphiidae).

Freshwater fish live in rivers or lakes, while saltwater species reside in oceans or seas or brackish water with both types inhabiting brackish water containing both salt and freshwater elements. Salmon, tuna, halibut are examples of saltwater species; freshwater varieties tend to be leaner with milder flavors; some varieties such as trout and bass provide vital Omega-3 fats that promote heart health.

Saltwater fish such as trout and mackerel are often enjoyed raw in sushi-style preparations, while other seafood such as cod from cold Atlantic or Pacific waters and halibut from Alaskan or Northwest Pacific waters is widely sought-after for raw or canned preparations. Both species provide protein rich meals while providing omega-3 fatty acid benefits.

Bivalves (mollusks), are another major group of seafood. Examples of mollusks include oysters, clams, mussels and scallops which are generally considered delicacies and consumed throughout the world – raw or lightly steamed versions can be found everywhere from restaurants to grocery stores.

Crustaceans are another popular form of seafood and include shrimp, crabs, lobsters and crayfish. Crustaceans can be enjoyed hot or cold; many also provide good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Jellyfish are an interesting type of seafood, often overlooked when considering edible options for dishes. There are various species available and each has unique textures and flavors; in some dishes they even stand in for shrimp!

There are also a few species of edible sea urchins (echinoderms). Each one requires special care when cooking – there may be several species available but all require careful handling during preparation.

Another type of seafood you might encounter at specialty markets are more exotic varieties like octopuses, cuttlefish, and squid. Octopus is one of the more delectable seafood choices; however it must be cooked very carefully to avoid rubberiness or toughness. Snakehead fish, samphire, and sea cucumbers may also be enjoyed as dishes for their unique textures or even appearance.
